Why is standardization important for the IoT?

This incident highlights the magnitude of the security risks posed by IoT, and similar attacks could potentially occur on a larger scale.

Necessity of Standardization

  • In today’s world where smart devices play a critical role, security is of utmost importance. The Internet of Things requires standardization to regulate an industry with few restrictions and to ensure consistency in managing firewalls, backend tasks, and more. A standard model for the Internet of Things has been proposed to address the industry’s challenges.
  • Such a model could set a standard for portability, manageability, and interoperability, which are areas that many IoT manufacturers and consumers struggle with. Bringing together IT specialists, leaders, and managers can create a standard code that covers all aspects of IoT. Regulations and restrictions can define the extent of data ownership and identify the circumstances under which data can be sold or shared.
  • Moreover, standardization can help clarify misconceptions about data collection and manipulation. IoT devices collect data, which users may think they own, but that is not always the case. Using an IoT device means providing it with information about oneself, intentionally or not. However, without regulation, IoT manufacturers can use, sell, or share this information, or worse, hackers can access it for their own purposes.
  • By regulating the IoT industry, the flow of data can be controlled, and data can be prevented from reaching the wrong hands. Therefore, to continue reaping the benefits of IoT, standardizing the IoT industry is critical.
